Guzzler repair June 5/6, 2008
Mojave National Preserve Cima Dome near Kelso Train Station

16 volunteers show up for this project. I showed up at camp at 6 am on the fifth and several
volunteers were ready and waiting.  The camp site that Lyle had secured for us was outstanding.  It
was an old RV camping area with lots of room.  Thank you Julia for allowing us to us the site.  Jesse
cooked breakfast for us and around 7:30 am we headed to guzzlers B202, 203 and 204 and Gary and
Joe headed to Bullock Spring to install small water tank.  Jim and BJ found the road to 202 and by
11:30 am we had striped the tar, installed tortoise ramp and applied first coat of Merlex.  Off to
203.....little problem with 203, access road is in a wash which looked like silica sand.  Jim's Toyota
4X4 barely escaped the sand.  Conrad Jones and Rudy did walk to 203 and installed a tortoise ramp.
We decided that we could not get the equipment out if we drove in so we had to pass on 203 until
later this year.  We do have a plan that will allow us to return and restore this guzzler.  Off to
B204....striped the tar, installed ramp and first coat by 4:00 pm and headed back to camp.  Everyone
worked hard and in one day we managed to get two guzzlers 80% complete.

When we returned to camp we found out that Gary had pulled a muscle in his back and had to leave
and return home.  Gary left us all the materials needed to finish the work at Bullock Spring.   Get
well Gary!!

Dinner time;  Josh brought Tri-tip, Jesse and Lyle cooked it and along with Marie's salad, some
corn, beans and lemon cake, sitting by the fire under the stars we had a great dinner.

Jesse was cooking breakfast at 6 am the next morning, we all filled up and headed to B202 and 204
to apply second coat of Merlex.  Jim, BJ, Lyle and Jesse headed to Bullock Spring to install water
tank.  We were all back in camp by 12 noon.  Good job.  The pic's show the work done on the spring
and guzzlers, notice the quail on top of B204.  Jim McGee took these pic's.

I would like to thank all the volunteers including our youngest Zach, 11 years old, for all their help.  I
would also like to thank Robert Carlson with Ganahl Lumber Co of Costa Mesa for giving us
discounts on the grinding wheels and Joe Hesse for his financial contribution, plus I cannot forget
Nick for donating the goodies for our raffle.
